“When you decide, it’s done.”

“When you decide, it’s done.”

These were powerful words spoken to me by a new friend and fellow coach, who I met this week while on retreat. What a lovely reminder of how a commitment to a decision can fuel massive momentum for action.

Honestly, I needed this reminder. I’ve been unworking some old, unhelpful mindsets that I’ve noticed can creep in and limit my momentum. Usually, those mindsets involve an incorrect assumption or false story that causes me to pause and delay taking the next action.

The word “decision” evolved from the Latin word “decidere,” which means “to cut off.” As someone who loves creating possibilities, I can sometimes struggle with the false belief that making a decision “cuts off” the possibilities I’ve worked so hard to create.

I benefit from helpful reminders to balance my possibility-creation with clear decision-making. Having choice creates power, but having too many choices absent a decision to commit and move forward on any of them can become debilitating.

Imagine circling an elegant buffet of fabulous food options. You circle and circle and circle, holding your empty plate, reviewing and re-reviewing every option, yet tasting none. Continuing to circle the choices will never satisfy your grumbling belly.

“When you decide, it’s done.”

If you ever find yourself struggling with a decision, remember this: while a decision does cut out options, it also clears the way for a whole new set of possibilities to emerge. Your decision unlocks the path to the other side where those new possibilities await.
