The Breakthrough Builder
How do you build a breakthrough?
While there is no perfect one-size-fits-all instruction manual, here are some of the key steps I use to coach leaders in creating openings to new possibilities.
🪅 𝗥𝗲𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗵𝗼𝗺𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿𝘀𝗲𝗹𝗳 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗼 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗶𝗻𝗻𝗲𝗿 𝗸𝗻𝗼𝘄𝗶𝗻𝗴.
As leaders, we often get accustomed to bypassing or suppressing our own needs so that we can survive challenges, meet ambitious timelines, and/or be in service of a greater, collective good. When we learn to separate ourselves from the pressure we experience, we can rediscover our true, authentic voice that has been quieted along the way. This inner knowing is a powerful tool for guiding any breakthrough.
🪅 𝗚𝗲𝘁𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗰𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗿 𝗼𝗻 𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝘄𝗮𝗻𝘁, 𝘄𝗵𝘆 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝘄𝗮𝗻𝘁 𝗶𝘁, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗳𝗲𝗲𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗶𝘁 𝗰𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗲𝘀 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻 𝘆𝗼𝘂.
Accomplished leaders have lots of practice in evaluating situations and determining the best next steps to achieve great results. Over time, we learn how to evaluate feasibility, identify risks, and weigh the trade-offs. While these are amazing skills, they often point us away from what we truly 𝙬𝙖𝙣𝙩, so that we can achieve what is actually 𝙧𝙚𝙖𝙡𝙞𝙨𝙩𝙞𝙘 given the context. When I work with leaders, I invite them to start with the question of what they really, really want, 𝙧𝙚𝙜𝙖𝙧𝙙𝙡𝙚𝙨𝙨 𝙤𝙛 𝙖𝙣𝙮 𝙡𝙞𝙢𝙞𝙩𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣𝙨. We explore a wide range of options, imagine what success would look like, and start imagining the associated sensations of that success.
🪅 𝗟𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗼 𝗮𝗹𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗿𝗲𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽 𝘁𝗼 𝗮𝗱𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗶𝘁𝘆.
Once we’ve identified what we really want, we’ll soon see that life sends all sorts of circumstances that “get in the way.” These circumstances can create experiences of doubt that cause us to back away from what we really want and settle for what may be most feasible. When we can build practices for questioning those circumstances and understanding our experience, we can begin to process the adversity and create a new relationship with it so that it informs our path, but doesn’t stop us.
🪅 𝗧𝗮𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗺𝗶𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗮𝗹𝗶𝗴𝗻𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝘄𝗮𝗻𝘁.
Breakthroughs often feel like they happen instantaneously, yet they are the result of many actions taken over time. When we, as leaders, are clear on what we want and get committed to navigating through the adversity that gets in the way, we can then begin building accountability through our action-taking. I’ve watched leaders craft goals, build new habits, leverage supportive networks, and all sorts of other strategies for forwarding breakthrough actions.
